reading everyone’s kind comments and reviews about the hats and towels, and we can’t wait to come out with more clothing and products in 2024.
Before we dive into our plans for 2024, we want to reflect a little bit on this past year.
Before we launched on March 1st, we spent a whole year designing and perfecting our FTG Blossom Bucket Hat. We chose to come out with a bucket hat first because they are lightweight, easy to store in a golf bag or drawer, provide sun protection, are impressionable, and there’s not a lot of feminine golf bucket hats in the market. To make them even better, we added an adjustable drawstring, created a design for the hat to be worn with the rim up or down, chose appealing colors for women and young girls, and added a magnet inside the rim for a ball marker. We had no idea of how they would sell. Both of our dads said, “Treat this like a side hustle and keep your expectations reasonable. You might sell 1,000 in the first week or you might sell 20.”
Our sales were steady in the beginning, but then they picked up speed as interest bloomed at the beginning of June. Our main way of advertising is through our Instagram (forethegirls_golf). We have been fortunate enough to build an audience on the platform and do what we LOVE to do: help women and young girls get into golf and spread positivity. Golf can be an intimidating sport, so we want to keep it light and airy for people. It has been pretty cool to see the places our hats have traveled to. We now have customers in the U.S, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Indonesia, Singapore and more! We feel very grateful for our customers…we could not do any of this without you!
So far, we’ve done all of the operations of the business ourselves, besides production and importing the products. We want to learn the ins and outs of our business to understand the process, save money, learn the technology, learn to communicate with people effectively, study the information, and use our creativity. There are so many moving parts, but we love seeing everything come together. In 2024, we plan to hire extra help, so we are looking forward to learning about the hiring process in the near future.
In 2024, we will come out with more products and apparel. We are most excited for the new dresses coming out in the spring. We designed flattering dresses that are functional and comfortable for wearing on the course, especially in hot and humid conditions. They have lots of pockets for storing tees and golf balls, and the material is lightweight and breathable. The dresses are also designed to flatter many different body types. We’ve noticed that a lot of golf dresses on the market and in pro shops lay awkwardly on peoples’ bodies, so we made sure the seams hit in the right places. The first public reveal of the designs will not be until January. We are keeping them a secret until then 😉
We are also coming out with more hat colors including cream, sage green, icy blue, and navy. All of these colors will be available in the spring. In addition to the dresses, we plan to come out with dresses for younger girls, monochromatic clothing sets, and comfy fall pullovers.
We learned so much in 2023 and loved growing the business. Prior to launching the hats, we did not really know anything about starting a business. We “winged” so many ideas, but keeping a positive mentality, getting good support, and letting our creativity flow helped turn our thoughts and business decisions into a reality. The two biggest things we learned this year were 1. Getting inventory takes WAY longer than we thought. There’s always going to be some sort of delay. 2. Go with your gut feeling. Your gut feeling is always right. Our experience goes to show that anyone can start a business, and having the drive to change something in the world for the better is a good starting point.
